    The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California is an excellent example of the United States' commitment to science and innovation. The facility is cooperative effort between the U.S. Department of Energy and the University of California at Berkeley. Their web site features some of the most advanced multi-disciplinary research in science and technology in the country, with an emphasis in renewable energy. It is an excellent example of a collaborative effort between government, higher education, and the public and private sectors. The center also conducts a sizable amount of study of artificial intelligence technologies. It operates mostly through funding from the U.S. government. The facility is one of perhaps 50 or more like it in the country. Discoveries at these facilities today will produce many of the new technologies and innovations needed in the coming years.
