In a retrospective look at technology and innovation in the late 19th Century, a new and yet to be published book, William Lodge: A 19th Century Entrepreneur, authored by the late W. L. Dolle, Jr., examines the life and career of William Lodge, who guided many of the key advances in machine tool building in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Mr. Lodge helped the town of Cincinnati, Ohio, earn the title, "machine tool capital of the world." The book follows the career of William Lodge as he founded three companies, introduced the concept of mass production to the manufacture of machine tools, and patented over 10 machine tool inventions. The author labels Lodge an "entrepreneur," and makes key comparisons of the machine tool industry of the 19th Century to that of Silicone Valley and the high tech sector of the late 20th Century. A PDF file is provided (free of charge) for downloading and viewing off of this site. Copyright rules also restrict unauthorized printing and hosting of this book. We are interested in an equity publishing agreement with a book publishing company, or a philanthropic underwriting by an organization such as the Cincinnati Museum Center, where proceeds could be donated to a designated foundation. The late W. L. Dolle, Jr. was CEO of the Lodge & Shipley Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1967 to 1987. After retiring, he authored several books, one of which led to a 1992 appearance on CBS's 60 Minutes. W. L Dolle later taught in Xavier University's MBA Program. William Lodge is the great grandfather to W. L. Dolle. Jr. |
